university :)

Psychology is one of the most popular degree subjects across the developed world. Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour, its antecedents and the context in which that behaviour occurs. Psychology can be studied at many different levels. These include the biological level, which is concerned with the structure and function of the nervous system, the cognitive level, which is concerned with functions like memory, language and perception, and the social level which studies how people interact with each other in groups and organizations. There are various ways to observe human behaviour, ranging from brain imaging techniques using the methods of neuroscience, to questionnaire studies. Some psychologists are interested in understanding the behaviour of adults, some study developmental processes which occur as human intelligence and personality change over the lifespan, and others examine how human abilities and health may be affected, for example, by brain damage or by stress. Others study the behaviour of animals in order to learn about the nature and evolution of human abilities.

Psychology as a discipline is both empirical and theoretical, making use of a wide variety of techniques such as systematic observation, field studies, controlled experiments and computer simulations. Despite the diversity of method and approach, psychologists are united by their common aim to further our understanding of human behaviour in all its many manifestations and contexts. The work of psychologists contributes not only to understanding ourselves, but also to the design of safe and healthy environments, for example in education, work or leisure, and to the development of ways to help people who are challenged, or otherwise unhealthy or unhappy.

Psychology Degree Course Structure

Psychology is studied as a single subject leading to a BSc Honours Degree.
It can also be studied at an introductory level on many other degree courses at Nottingham. Students are accepted on the BSc degree with A-Levels (or other equivalent qualifications) in Science or Arts subjects, or a combination. Please note that Psychology A level is NOT required.

Year One

Students spend 70% of their time studying psychology and are introduced to the core areas of biological, cognitive, developmental, social psychology, personality and individual differences. The modules cover the applied aspects of these subjects, for example in education, engineering and clinical settings, as well as theoretical principles. Lectures and tutorials on these core areas are accompanied by a practical methods module, which teaches students how to plan, carry out and report on psychological experiments, and by a module in statistical methods of analysis.

Year Two

Psychology modules follow on from the core first year courses, tackling the same topics in greater depth and dealing with more advanced theoretical problems. Students take four compulsory lecture modules and continue training in research methods. Greater independence in undertaking research is expected as practical sessions run in a series of five-week group projects, which are accompanied by further statistics courses. A student may, with the permission of the Head of School, take modules worth 20 credits outside Psychology and defer a compulsory psychology module to the third year.

Year Three

One third of the credits in the third year are from the compulsory individual practical project and report. The project lasts throughout the year, and students, acting under supervision, are expected to take the initiative in designing and carrying out the research themselves. In addition, students are able to select from a range of advanced specialist modules. These options include applied areas such as clinical, educational, and sports psychology, and human-computer interaction, as well as advanced options dealing with topics of current importance in research. It is possible to develop one of these modules into a dissertation for credit.

Admission Requirements

  • SPM/ GCSE (or equivalent) - minimum Grade B in Mathematics
  • A-level (A2) offer is based on 3 A-level subjects (typically BBB); for a combined A/AS level, an equivalent offer is made. A-level passes in either Science or Art subjects are acceptable. Applicants with A-levels that are substantially non-academic (such as PE, Art or Drama) will be at a disadvantage in competition with students who have A-levels with a strong academic component.
  • STPM with grade points of 3.33 in at least 3 subjects (i.e. equivalent to B+ B+ B+).
  • Candidates with International Baccalaureate are offered a minimum of 30 points for entry, with specified grades in science or strong academic arts subjects.
  • Other Qualifications such as UEC, South Australian Matriculation, Canadian Pre-U (OAC) or other equivalent qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

English Language Requirements

  • English Language (O level or GCSE) Grade B or SPM Grade A1
  • An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of at least 6.5, with a minimum score of at least 5.5 in each of the 4 individual elements of the test; or
